New Mexico Highlands University, or NMHU for short, is a public university in Las Vegas, which is a city in San Miguel County, in the US state of New Mexico, with a population estimated at a number of more than 14 500, during the 2000 census. NMHU was established in 1893, as New Mexico Normal School, which became New Mexico Normal University, in 1902, the institution finally adopting its current name in 1941, expanding its mission beyond teacher education.
Today, the university has an enrollment estimated at a number of approximately 3500 students, most of which are Hispanic, offering various educational programs at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, in areas of study which include: English, Early Childhood Education, Mass Communications, Indo-Hispano Cultural Studies, Applied Chemistry, Media Arts and Computer Science, Public Affairs and many other.
NMHU's athletic teams are known as the Cowboys, which compete in the NCAA's Division II's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, in 10 sports, for both men and women, including in volleyball, basketball, college football and cross-country.
